ABOUT VIDEOCALLING
Simplexity: Complex to build. Simple to use.
Mobile video calling is based on a circuit-switched wireless connection. It is limited to WCDMA, 1xRTT/EV-DO, and UMTS, or 3G, networks and handsets. A mobile phone user simply calls a number to directly reach another 3G user or video service. The user can switch on a video portal between content channels using the phone's keypad (DTMF tones), just like changing channels via a TV remote control device. No player downloads, browsers, bookmarks or setup is necessary. It's just call and go.
Video calling is sticky, because, after all, it is so new, yet so familiar at the same time.
Mobile network operators have invested over 71 billion pounds on 3G licenses in Europe , and peer-to-peer video calling has been one of their first attempts to spur interest in 3G services.
NQUIR believes in the strong future growth of 3G mobile handsets in Europe that will be driven by operator and vendor efforts on the backdrop of natural handset churn. Video call-enabled handsets will eclipse 2.5G handsets by 2009 in most European markets, according to Ovum, and allow for consumer mass marketing and video call entertainment services.
